Post Ride Bicycle Care

When most people return from a ride, they tend to take care of themselves quite well: food, shower, water, and fresh clothes. But what about the bike? Just like you, your bike needs some care and attention after a ride. Here are a couple suggestions:

  • Clean your bike - After riding in any condition, it is a good idea to wipe down your bike with a rag. If you have been through the mud, it would be a good idea to rinse it off under the hose, but be careful not to force water into any bearings. Doing so may also force dirt into those small spaces, which can cause early wear on your bearings. As much as I love working on your bikes, I’d rather see you out riding them instead!

  • Inspect - Take a good look at your bike and inspect it for possible damage that may have occurred on your ride. This is especially important if you crashed. Some bike injuries are very small, so pay close attention. If you find something that looks off, do not ride it. Bring it to us to have a look as well. Riding something broken can have very serious and dangerous outcomes.

  • Re-lubricate - After riding and cleaning your bike, check the amount of lubrication on your chain. Add lubrication if needed. This will prevent rusting and keep your shifting quiet and smooth. Remember that you only need lubrication on the pins and rollers in the chain. Use that rag again to wipe off all excess lubrication on the outside of your chain. Please stop by County Cycles for a free demonstration if this is something you’ve never done!

  • Store your bike - Find a nice home for your bike. Make sure it is out of the way of traffic in your home, where it is least likely to get knocked over or stolen. If space is tight, consider using wall mount bike hangers and hooks or even a ceiling hoist. Yes, of course, you can find a selection of options here at County Cycles!
